Seven Wedding Traditions That Aren’t Set in Stone
Wedding Photo Gold Coast. We all have our own specific ideas about what a perfect wedding should look like. Many people favour a more traditional celebration, with a big white dress, long veil and bucketloads of confetti. However, more and more couples are starting to shun those age-old wedding ‘rules’, in favour of more modern celebrations. So, if you’re planning your upcoming wedding and you’re not really one for tradition, why not take a look at some of our ideas on wedding traditions that aren’t set in stone.
The White Dress
We often think that brides have always wed in a white dress, but in fact this tradition only began in the Victorian era, when Queen Victoria started the fashion by choosing a white dress for her own ceremony.
Nowadays, brides are increasingly opting for something which suits their own style a little better, and there are so many options to choose from if white isn’t your colour. For instance, you could go for a luxurious gown in a dark shade of ruby red, emerald green or any hue that takes your fancy. You could even choose an ivory gown with coloured embellishments or a pattern. It’s not all about the white dress anymore!
The Long Veil
Sure, long bridal veils look lovely in pictures, but have you ever actually tried to wear one? If you have, you might agree that these impractical pieces aren’t the accessory for you. Most brides only end up wearing their veil for the ceremony, before immediately discarding it anyway! There are plenty of alternatives to choose from if a veil isn’t your thing, so have a look at some of the other options. We love floral crowns, headbands and sparkling sequin-encrusted hair pieces to set a bridal outfit off.

The First Dance
For an extrovert couple who love a good boogie, the first dance is the perfect way to kick off those wedding celebrations. However, we know that it’s not for everyone. If the idea of taking to the dance floor in front of everyone you know brings you out in a cold sweat, don’t panic. You don’t have to do it! Why not take the pressure off yourselves and invite the bridal party to join you on the dance floor, or better yet have all the guests take to the floor for a dance.
The Aisle Music
Nothing says ‘wedding day’ like Wagner’s “Bridal Chorus.” However, if you’re not one for tradition we bet this isn’t high on your list of aisle music choices. In fact, brides are increasingly opting for romantic songs which speak to them personally for their aisle music. So, whether it’s the lyrics or the melody that give you goosebumps, just remember you can always opt for something completely different for your aisle music.
The Ceremony Program
Ceremony programs are often very traditional, particularly if you’re planning a religious ceremony in a church or similar. But they don’t have to be! In fact, more light-hearted ceremony programs often go down a storm with guests. We particularly like ceremony programs which introduce guests to members of the bridal party, and include a few romantic quotes and poems for guests to amuse themselves as they wait for the bride to arrive.

The First Look
We’ve always been told that the couple must stay well away from each other the night before the wedding, but what about the morning? Most grooms don’t see their brides until they walk down the aisle, when emotions are always running high. If you’d rather see each other a little earlier, and spend time together without the prying eyes of all your guests, you can! Just plan a first look and spent a little time with your soon to be husband or wife before the wedding gets underway. Remember, if you do choose to do this, it’s a great idea to involve your photographer, as those first look photos are always beautiful!
The Matching Rings
Couples have long gone for matching wedding rings, but sometimes this just isn’t practical. Just because you’re in love, doesn’t mean that you necessarily have the same taste in jewellery now, does it! So, if you and your loved one don’t see eye to eye on the wedding ring design, don’t worry. You can definitely go for mismatched rings and each choose one that represents you perfectly. That way you’ll both have a personal piece of jewellery to cherish for many years to come.
Your wedding is your day, so make it your own! Create a day that represents you as a couple, and don’t be blinded by the traditions of generations gone by. If you love a traditional wedding, that’s great. But if you don’t, there’s so much more you can do to create a personal celebration that’s perfect for you and your loved ones. Be creative, and don’t be afraid to do things differently!
